Message from European Midwives Association for 5th of May – International day of the Midwife
Midwives are essential
On International Day of the Midwife, the European Midwives Association (EMA) celebrates midwives as a trusted and essential pillar of health care for women, newborns, families, and communities across Europe.
In a rapidly changing world—shaped by digital transformation, demographic shifts, migration, public health challenges, and growing health inequalities—midwives continue to provide reliable, evidence-based, and compassionate care. Trust is at the heart of midwifery: trust built through continuity of care, professional expertise, ethical practice, and close relationships with women and communities.
Midwives play a vital role across the life course, particularly in community and primary care settings, where they promote health, prevent illness, support informed choice, and reduce inequalities. Their contribution is fundamental to strengthening resilient health systems, improving access to care, and ensuring that women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights are respected and protected.
As health systems evolve, midwives are also embracing innovation—integrating digital tools, new models of care, and interdisciplinary collaboration—while maintaining the human, relational core of their profession. EMA calls on policymakers, health authorities, and educational institutions to invest in midwifery education, regulation, workforce sustainability, and enabling scopes of practice, so that midwives can continue to deliver high-quality care in a changing world.
On this day, EMA reaffirms its commitment to advocating for midwives across Europe and to working with partners to ensure that midwifery remains visible, valued, and empowered—today and for the future.
Midwives are trusted care. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
